The Cabinet gave its nod for extending Kochi metro rail to the IT hub Kakkanad. Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said the new phase (extension 1B) of the metro will be from Jawaharlal Nehru International stadium at Kaloor to Kakkanad. The decision was taken during a Cabinet meeting held in Thiruvananthapuram recently.
The proposed extension will cover 11.2 kilometres with an additional expenditure of Rs 2,017 crore. Citing an expert study, Chandy said there would be 124,000 passengers commuting towards Kakkanad by 2021, which is expected to increase to 195,000 in the following 10-year period.
