Metro railways has become an integral part of the city commute in 10 cities of India and there are as many as 20 cities where metro rail is planned or under-construction. These metro rails pass through and cut across the cities, making them permanent engineering structures that are going to remain an integral and a very prominent part of the city-scape. This is the precise reason why many metrodevelopers are focusing on the overall aesthetics of these megastructures.
Transrail - a leading EPC company which has its presence across power transmission and distribution (T&D), lighting infrastructure, substations and railways- is playing an important role in enhancing visual appeal of the metro rails. For the first time in India, Transrail has brought aesthetically superior tubular portal structure that supports current carrying conductors for metro railways. Transrail has, for the first time in India, manufactured successfully and type-tested in its test bed and supplied these tubular portals for the Nagpur Metro Rail in Maharashtra.
These aesthetically superior portals replace the conventional lattice structure. These commonly seen traditional lattice structure has many short-comings. They not just occupy larger footprint but also cause hazards. The structure provides an ideal setup for birds to build nests. Also, humans can easily climb on the lattice structure, thereby making it a safety concern. The tubular structure, due to its design, makes it almost impossible to climb on.
Commenting on the complexity of creating this simple but elegant structure, Hemant Jain, President, Pole Business,Transrail said 'Creating tubular structure was not easy. The structure requires two conical poles and one 12 metre-long U-shaped pipe bent on both ends. Transrail, due to its modern infrastructure and having highly skilled engineers, not only could manufacture and mount these sections at its facility but also more importantly type-test for the client at our facility itself. This is a big differentiator, as in India, Transrail is one of the few companies with such skillset and infrastructure of 14 metre-long galvanising bath required to create such structures.'
'Metro rails will significantly improve connectivity and mobility. Transrail is geared to play a crucial role in the urban developments by bringing modern concept, indigenous manufacturing and a quick turnaround, as compared to the developed countries. Tubular portals at Nagpur Metro is a testimony to Transrail's highly skilled manpower and manufacturing prowess. These new portals are expected to set a new trend for all future metro rail projects in India, and Transrail hopes to be a key beneficiary.' added DC Bagde, Managing Director, Transrail.
